I’ve personally found that breaking down big changes into smaller, more manageable steps makes the process smoother. However, I’ve also realized that fear of failure can hold us back from even starting the journey. What do you think is the best way to overcome that initial hesitation when facing a big change? Additionally, how do you maintain consistency during the transition when things don’t always go as planned? These are the aspects I find most challenging in my own pursuit of transformation.

    • I totally agree that breaking down tasks and challenges to make things more manageable is something that gets constantly overlooked. When you look at those who had success in their journey, you hear or read that they learned to embrace change, but how they came to that point is often ignored. Small victories I feel are a crucial part to overcoming fear!  Especially the fear of failure. Undertaking a grand task without strategy or a plan, can lead to being overwhelmed and the fear of failure can creep in and keep you from completing that task. Along with breaking down tasks and changes (which again I think you’re on the money) is developing a system. See, when facing a big change, the scariest part is facing the unknown. I believe the unknown often triggers our anxieties making our imaginations run wild, again, making us apprehensive and fearful. The best way to overcome that hesitation is to educate yourself about what is happening. Ask yourself “what is actually changing?..Why is this change taking place?…Is it a necessary change?” ..and of course “when is the change taking place?..” Stopping and asking yourself these questions forces you to actually analyze the situation you’re in. ANSWERING these questions forces you to take action and start implementing a system used to work through these changes. Once you recognize what is actually happening, your mind tends to start focusing the tasks that are in front of you. How many times in your life where you had to go through something because you had no choice and you didn’t have time to be scared? Then out of nowhere it was over! How did you make it out? Because the thought of not surviving outweighed your fear of failure. The task at hand actually distracted you from fear and subconsciously, you got to work! All you’re doing in the above case is consciously activating that same concept. 

      Consistency…. sheesh!! That’s ALWAYS the killer isn’t it? So as a person with ADHD being consistent was always an issue and still is a challenge to this day. A couple of things I discovered when I really met this head on.. I get bored easily, My mind likes to wonder, and when things don’t go as planned I want to stop and do something else. After getting SOOO frustrated with not being able to complete things I actually started literally talking to myself. Saying out loud what I was and was not going to do. I discovered that audibly speaking to myself made things real. After experiencing hangups I started realizing that when I literally tell myself “it’s not that hard” or talk my way through an issue, I tend to get it done. When I hit a snag or something changes, I acknowledge it right away and tell myself that we’re not giving in, then issue a challenge to myself to conquer the moment. After researching and studying things to better my life, I ran across what is referred to as “self talk”. I discovered that many of the most successful people navigate unforeseen circumstances in this way. Sometimes you have to talk yourself through the very system you’ve implemented to help guide you through your transition. It’s hard to stay consistent when things around you are constantly changing but a steady system is your playbook to get you through; and like any playbook, adjustments may need to be made but the core philosophy remains. Talking things out audibly to yourself or even with someone trustworthy, helps organize your thoughts and often leads you to your next steps.
